Container Gardening With Burlap Liners

On Feb 23, 2015

When planning your container gardening for the upcoming spring and summer months, there are some important things to consider before purchasing your liners, containers and plants. Burlap liners are a flexible material that are environmentally friendly and inexpensive. They are an excellent choice for the more organic gardener who is planning a very natural looking gardenscape. Using a larger basket will lead to higher water retention meaning less maintenance and will allow for bigger more vibrant plants. Having particular plants in mind when making your container purchases is helpful so you can suit the basket to the flower instead of vice versa.

Once you have selected your container and fitted your liner, it is time to decide if you want to insert a drainage pipe for even distribution of air and water. Be sure to leave three to four inches of soil between the pipe and the base of the container then layer soil over the pipe and pad it down firmly.

Next, it is time to place your bulbs or plants in the basket. Pansies are a favorite for gardeners in the spring months (March-June) due to their hardiness. These plants can withstand any late snowfall or frost that may occur. If adding any other flowers to this Spring container, it is a good idea to purchase a frost cover such as a heavy weight polypropylene fabric for extra cold nights. During the summer months of June to September, vibrancy and variety are the key to a great summer container. Ideally, there should be 2-3 species and between 6-8 plants depending on the size of the basket.

These burlap lined wire hanging baskets are a great way to avoid run-of-the-mill garden designs as each container will be different. Their lush, cascading flowers are bound to brighten up any space whether it`s your own backyard or the entrance to a business. Keep them watered and maintained properly and you will have beautiful color all spring and summer long.
